Beware the dreaded ‘Turkey Back’

But what is ‘Turkey Back’ and how do I avoid it?

Read on and I’ll tell you…..

Because Christmas is traditionally a time of relaxation and generally lounging around, stuffing our faces and drinking too much, we are actually more prone to the usual causes of musculoskeletal problems – poor posture, slouching, and awkward lifting. Perhaps you are planning to help out in the kitchen this year? Well, take extra care as bending awkwardly to lift a heavy bird into the oven, may lead to the acute onset of ‘Turkey Back’.

Poor core stability can mean that while being overloaded with a heavy weight, the small facet joints of the back can become sprained. This leads to inflammation and pain. Drinking too much causes inhibition of the nervous system, and decreased sensitivity to pain. This, coupled with falling asleep in a less than ideal posture on the sofa in front of a 3-hour ‘Lord of The Rings’ saga, is a dangerous combo. I’m sure many of you will have woken up from an alcohol-induced slumber feeling like Gandalf the Grey! Perhaps after stuffing your faces with meat and 10 veg you participated in some innocent fun and games with the family.

Feeling bold enough to get the ‘Twister’ mat on the go? Before being entwined with Great aunt Ethel and that weird uncle you never speak to, consider that you may be putting your body into contortionist-style poses that happen but once a year. This can spell trouble for those creaky joints of yours.

As well as these, there are the potential perils of dodgy British weather. Icy footpaths, which need no explanation, and wet weather- especially if like me you’re from Wales, which seems to be doing quite well considering the Niagara Falls style weather.

If you are feeling a little achy and sore and want to be in tip top condition for Christmas come see us for a check up and a general MOT. We’ll iron out the creases and free your aching joints to get you back on top form. What better way to head into Christmas and the New Year than with your spine feeling good as new!

Happy Holidays!
